Sharkproof Living is a movement helping people learn about their environment to make better decisions and control the outcomes. You learn to navigate with sharks as a pilot fish instead of becoming shark food.

This is a guest blog "Why small businesses are paying for AI enthusiasm instead of AI results." In this environment the shark is the peer group. Not a vendor, not a salesperson, but the crowd that signals what the cool kids are doing. Small business owners who normally behave like disciplined pilot fish start drifting toward AI spending because the shark is moving and they feel pressure to move with it. The result is shark food behavior: money spent without a problem statement, without KPIs, and without a stop rule. Pilot fish do not get to make the sharks leave; they just stop being the ones who buy because the school is turning.

Most small businesses don’t have discretionary capital. Every dollar spent on a project is a dollar not available for payroll, an equipment repair, or a customer opportunity. That constraint isn’t a weakness — it’s actually a discipline enforcer. Or it should be.
Something strange is happening right now. The same owner who agonizes over a $3,000 equipment purchase or contracted service is signing up for AI tools and initiatives without a business case, without defined KPIs, and without a kill switch. The justification? “Everyone else is doing it” — and the fear of being left behind does the rest.

The data is not kind to that reasoning.

I recently met the author of a book aimed at helping improve financial literacy amongst consumers: "Sharkproof Living: A 7 Step Journey to Financial Independence on your own terms" by Nabil Bedewi. The “shark-proof” concept is essentially making yourself financially resilient enough that life’s unexpected problems—job loss, market downturns, emergencies, etc.—don’t control your future.

Sharkproof Living (SPL) has begun donating the book “Sharkproof Living: A 7 Step Journey to Financial Independence on your own terms” to nonprofits. This effort is part of the Financial Literacy Campaign and addresses the number one financial regret people have, namely, not starting to save and invest in their 20s and 30s. At $3, the eBook serves as a low-cost, high impact option for people to begin their financial literacy journey.

Financial literacy grows when people decide to take action. Lang Luu is one of those people. He understands that when you change a person’s literacy, you can change that person’s life. That belief led him to take advantage of the 100 Book Bulk Purchase and put Sharkproof Living directly into the hands of people who need to learn, decide, and control their financial future with confidence.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared this thought to ponder: Simplicity is the seed of compounding complexity. Managing it wisely is shark-proof living.

We all know how complexity can feel like a snowball rolling downhill. If it is left unchecked, it grows until it becomes unmanageable.

This week I have been thinking in reverse. What if the fish is rolling that snowball uphill?
Across the U.S., thousands of commencement ceremonies take place every May as nearly four million students graduate. As a student and later as a professor, I sat through more of them than I can count. One universal ritual: everyone gets subjected to speakers of wildly varying quality, and most of what they say evaporates from memory before the chairs are even folded.

So if I were giving a commencement speech today, here’s what it would be.
Back in the mid 1990s, my wife had just finished her doctorate in clinical psychology, and I was deep into my dissertation on applying AI to improve human judgment. At the same time, something else was taking shape, the early Internet. One day I showed her a demo of this evolving “thing” and told her that, combined with AI, it would change the future in ways we couldn’t yet imagine. Half joking, I said her role as a clinical psychologist might soon be eliminated. Without hesitation she said, “Based on what you showed me, my career is very safe because in that future, anxiety and loneliness will become the dominant problems.”
Hearing what’s resonating for you, the moments of clarity, the surprises, the shifts, has been incredibly meaningful. This book was written to bring calm to a part of life that stresses so many people and seeing that land for readers is the best part of this whole process.

If the book has helped you, one of the most helpful things you can do is share your experience in a short review on Amazon. A sentence or two is more than enough.
Now that Sharkproof Living™ is available worldwide, I want to start sharing some of my thoughts behind the movement. The ones that shaped the book and the ones that tend to help people the fastest. You’ll find these thoughts helpful for building a clearer, more grounded relationship with your personal finances.
Sharkproof Living™ has now completed its full rollout. The book is officially available across all major Amazon marketplaces in all three formats: Paperback, Hardcover, and eBook (for Kindle devices or the free Kindle apps).

If you’d like to support the early momentum, two things make a huge difference right now:
  • Pick up your copy early. These purchases help Amazon recognize the book’s traction and push it into the rankings where more people can discover it.
  • Leave a review on Amazon. Even a sentence or two helps others decide whether this book is right for them.
Throughout my life, I’ve watched the same pattern repeat. People are smart. People are capable. But the world keeps getting louder, faster, and more demanding.

Some people get pulled under by it. Some people stay afloat. And others learn how to move through it with clarity and control.

That’s why I started the Sharkproof Living™ movement to help people face high‑stakes moments with strength they can trust.
